Izumi Segawa, Living Landscapes Officer
[Solihull] says, "There are lots of superstitions attached to
Valentine's Day and some involve our favourite birds. It was said
that if a woman saw a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it
meant she would marry a sailor; if she saw a sparrow, she would
marry a poor man and be very happy and if she saw a goldfinch, she
would marry a rich person. Unfortunately, there don't seem to be
any superstitions for the men - sorry lads!! No need to fret,
though; if you come and join in with one of our weekend workparties
you will almost certainly see those same birds, even if they have
no romantic associations - and there's certainly nothing romantic
in the way that birds claim their territories and compete for
nesting sites. One important aspect of the work done by our
workparties is to improve the conditions for nesting birds and
their resultant families, so have a heart - come and give a
hand."
